The Admiral concurs in both these
recommendations, and as the former will entail no great
expense I propose to have the matter put in hand at once.

The light will be placed upon the
roof of the existing Signal Station, and, to obviate the
expense of lightkeepers, it has been decided to convert it
into an automatic occulting light of a type similar to
those in use at Stoneness and Broadness in the Thames, with
any modern improvements which may be considered advisable
consistent with an unattended light.

I have accordingly to request
that the assistance of the Trinity House may be invoked to
obtain for this Government an automatic apparatus to fit
the existing lenses, all details concerning which are in
the hands of Messrs. Chance Brothers, who supplied them in
1873. The occulting apparatus should be such as to show
light 3 seconds, occult 2 seconds, light to be visible
eight miles, the light to be red with a white sector
between the bearings 81° West and S. 89°W. (magnetic).
